How did Gandhi influence history?

Gandhi was hardly an original. His ideas of non-violence were inspired by Tolstoy. His real credit lies in the fact that he actually put these ideas into practice on a scale that involved many people; something that Tolstoy was unable to do because non-violent pacifism was seen as unpatriotic in his time because of the war between Russia and Japan
