Need advice on building my credit?

I have bout 4500 in debt that im paying off monthly. and i have been receiving offers from credit card companys. i was wondering if i open up a credit card will my credit score grow? reguardless of the debt i owe which im currently paying off. or should i just wait till i pay off everything? than open a credit and build my credit need advice please thank you
