Problems starting 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager?

It will start the first time in the morning usually on the first try, otherwise i get a clicking sound then it will start the second time. After that it wont start for about 4-5 hours. I only drive three miles to work. If I drive a farther distance, 8-10 miles on surface streets, the automatic trans doesn't want to shift into park. I can drive on the freeway, and it will go into park just fine. If the trans is overheating, will that cause problems with the starter, or do I have a separate issue?
