What you have heard is true. Additionally ethanol uses so much corn that the price of corn, which is a basic part of the diet in many countries, has been greatly increased. It has added to the hunger in third world countries. It has been estimated by scientists that to produce enough ethanol to relieve our dependence on oil we'd need more crop space for the corn than all the crop space currently available in the U.S. Not an environmentally good choice from my point of view.
